The Heartbreak Hotel is open for business today. It's Moody Blue in Memphis -- it was One Night 30 years ago that Elvis passed and left everyone All Shook Up under a Blue Moon. They had the Fever and they wanted to tell him Don't Be Cruel, but he and his fans went their Separate Ways and they all missed his Burning Love. He told them It's Now Or Never so just Love Me Tender -- Elvis was Goin' Home. It was The Last Farewell. They said There Goes My Everything, There's A Honky Tonk Angel wearing Blue Suede Shoes. They remembered him For The Good Times, though. They all said I Can't Help Falling In Love with you. Such A Night. It was a Mess Of Blues and Amazing Grace. Now all they can do is stand around Graceland Rubberneckin'.

Today's Words Gone Wild hauled before TWISTED LINGUISTICS were once again rounded up by Roxan.

I rememeber a few weeks ago - You could recacall even farther back if you'd lay off the drugs.

it would be kind of a waiste - Some kind of belt or girdle, I think.

I had my doughts but something about him - A crush on the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Foss is inconent party - Foss was so obsessed with proving his innocence that it rendered him incontinent.

dont froget - Do not touch that frog!

Jessi knows what's gunna happen - Which explains why Jessi's wearing Kevlar.

my mom said that it was in a forign language - And Mom should know whether she's fer it or agin it.

Never understood the "Elvis" thing and never will. I do find it interesting that he is the number 2 grossing dead celeb. Kurt Cobain is number one. Kurt's career only lasted 15 years and he released 3 albums. Elvis-decades and tons of number one hits. Amazing!

1. What brand of soap do you prefer?
Lever 2000- for all my 2000 body parts. Some more than others =P

6. Do you think there should be a desert island hidden away in a vast sea somewhere populated by (to start) Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears?

Yes and no. I think that much ego on one small island could create the next super storm that would destroy life as we know it. Wait...they have already ruined life as we know it.

7. How many hours of sleep do you need per night?
8-10

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought?

Television stand. What can I say? I'm a guy.

You're the furthest thing from emo. Sensitivity is not something you exactly cultivate... and you can't imagine weeping over song lyrics.

I see I'm going to be stuck hearing about elvis all day. He's dead, he wasn't that great of a singer and his image isn't in someone's bowl of oatmeal.

SJ,
What kind of Wacky Weird (Wonderful?) Widgets are you putting into your template? First thing that happened onloading your blog was me being prompted to save a robots.txt file. I looked at the source of your page, and you have some 50 or so widgets lines. Did you really do that, or is something else out there now?

Roxan, Roxan...my soul mate. I went to my mom's house for dinner last night and she got upset with me for bashing Elvis as "a man who could not sing, did not write any music, could not play an instrument, and stole his style from the oppressed."

She said "thanks for shitting on my childhood."

Sometimes you have to hurt the ones you love for their own good...

Elvis was a phony right down to the hair follicles.

If I had to choose between Kurt and Elvis, I'd have to pick Kurt. Still, they're both legends.

Lever 2000- for all my 2000 body parts. Some more than others =P

Kan, you stop that. Right now.:-)

Roxan, not everyone cared for Elvis, but he's undeniably an American icon.:)

I have no idea, Charles. How strange! The page opens as always for me. The only widget I've added recently was a new poll yesterday. Good grief, I hope it's not another one of those virus things.

Sigh, I can't believe he's been gone for 30 years. I saw him once. REALLY. Not at BK or something--at Graceland, a few months before he died.

1. What brand of soap do you prefer?

Hmm. I use Dove, mostly, and Burt's Bees Green Lettuce soap on my face.

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought?

Um...a sideboard and TV stand, lovely, dark wood and wrought iron.

Unknown said...

Kan, you stop that. Right now.:-)

What?! I have really clean hands. They touch everything after all. What were you thinking, perv? =P

Stacia said...

Oh, and since Kurt shit on my childhood with his fake punk music and corporate shenanigans, I pick Elvis hands-down. :-) Sorry.

I am mixed on Cobain. "Bleach" was an amazing album (I blindly bought anything on Subpop and SST back then.) I was saddened by their switch to Geffin and even more so with their embrace of MTV. I did like appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone with a shirt that said "corporate magazines still suck," but it was too late by then. The deathnail for me was the commercial for "Teen Spirit" deodorant with the blonde future bimbo saying into the camera "This smells like teen spirit!"
How you say....sellout!

rkfinnell said...

Icon? Maybe to some. My sisters were into him when we were young. I doubt they would claim to have been now.
I never saw the big deal. He was ugly. I grew up in a different era. I remember Bobby Sherman was big when I was a teenager. I never got that one either. He was ugly too.

1. What brand of soap do you prefer?
I don't notice any difference, though I've loved those Honey Bee soaps ever since I used to buy them in Chinatown in university in Toronto. They only ever had three 'flavours', and they were three for $1. Sandlewood, rose...and I forget the third: honey? Lavender? These days, I'm mad for anything lavender--tea, soap, soda, icecream. It's still blooming here all along the sidewalks and in the gardens, though it's waning.

2. How many online forums do you participate in?
Are we counting Google and Yahoo groups? If so, then GMR, GMR Editors, Broad Universe, & SFReader. If forums only, then SFReader.

3. Do you prefer a laptop or PC?
Laptop! I could never go back to that clunky monstrosity! Never! I want to blog from bed and the kitchen and the studio and the park and the coffee shop and the back yard and the...

4. Are you in love at this moment in time?
Sure.

5. Do you like Hip-Hop?
Unlike everyone else here, yes, if it's good. I also like good jazz, good rock, good opera... I dislike intensely bad hip-hop, bad jazz, bad rock...and so on. You know I loathe the genre categorizations. And as in all things, subjectivity reigns supreme.

6. Do you think there should be a desert island hidden away in a vast sea somewhere populated by (to start) Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears?
Whatever. They'd have tons of media coverage and turn the place into an elite party casino and the common pleb would while away his hours consuming candid shots of celebs on the beach and immensely boring stories about what the girls were eating for breakfast and how they tied their sarongs.

As long as I don't have to go there or talk about them ever again, I'm fine.

7. How many hours of sleep do you need per night?
Need? 8 or 9. Get? Not 8 or 9.

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought?
A set of five 1940s dining chairs from a thrift store. I'm supposed to be painting them today. Oh, and a variation of this.

Embarrassing.

1. What brand of soap do you prefer? Some soap I bought in my neighborhood made by the shop owner. It's wonderful. I use Obagi for my face.

2. How many online forums do you participate in?
Sadly, none right now. I am registered in one but I think it's a directional thing with me why I don't enjoy them.

3. Do you prefer a laptop or PC? neither. MAC all the way. G5 - big as a barn door.

4. Are you in love at this moment in time? yes

5. Do you like Hip-Hop? I might if I like the song

6. Do you think there should be a desert island hidden away in a vast sea somewhere populated by (to start) Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears?
You mean they're not.

7. How many hours of sleep do you need per night? 8-10

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought? no clue

I admire Elvis and Cobain. I like some of each of their music. Both died tragically. I say "tragically." Elvis died on the toilet from a drug overdose, not a really cool way to go out as The King. I mean there could be some crude jokes like The King on the throne.

December, I'm a Dove girl, too. I don't -- can't -- use anything else, although I DO use deliciously scented oils and bubbly stuff.

Oh, I see, Kan. Hands. All righty, then.:)

I loved the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' song, but I, too, loathe seeing the commercialization.

I grew up on Elvis, but quickly moved on with the advent of the fantastic music of the 60s. I do still like some of his songs, though.

Leelee, December, Camille, I love my laptop, too. I won't ever go back to a big, bulky PC.

Oh, Camille -- lavender. I LOVE lavender. I even use lavender scented dryer sheets. So, did you get those chairs painted yet? And I don't know why you're embarrassed about the storage unit. I could use one of those myself.

Serena said...

I'm not familiar with Obagi, CD. Is it gentle? I agree with you on Kurt v. Elvis. They both had their high points and their low points, both produced some memorable music, and both died in less than stellar ways.

I guess it's only fair that I submit to my own interrogation.:)

7. How many hours of sleep do you need per night? I usually get by on 4 or 5

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought? An ottoman for the dog to use as a ladder to climb onto my bed.

5. Do you like Hip-Hop? nope

6. Do you think there should be a desert island hidden away in a vast sea somewhere populated by (to start) Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears? Who are they? Are they real people, I thought, they were made up people who don't live in the real world, just on TV.

2. How many online forums do you participate in? ZERO

3. Do you prefer a laptop or PC? Laptop. I like Macs best, but I can only access work from home on a PC-based laptop. So that's what I use.

4. Are you in love at this moment in time? Yes, with so many people and so many things!

5. Do you like Hip-Hop? The good stuff. Is Dead Prez hip-hop?

6. Do you think there should be a desert island hidden away in a vast sea somewhere populated by (to start) Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears? No, I think there should be a desert island hidden away somewhere where I could go to hide from that slimy crew.

7. How many hours of sleep do you need per night? I love it if I get 9. I can function (and often do) on 6-7.

8. What was the last piece of furniture you bought? A cheap wicker end-table from Pier one which I then painted. That was months ago...I've bought a lot of plants and 3 candles since then, though.

Serena said...

Hi, Annie! It's nice to see you. Your antique table sounds nice. I love antiques.

I love your answer to #4, Greeny. Beautiful! Sheesh, I can't remember the last time I slept 8 or 9 hours. I guess I'm pretty weird because if I sleep that long, I wake up feeling more tired than when I went to bed. 6 hours is ideal for me, but that only happens on weekends any more.

Stacia said...

Woo-hee for Dove girls, Serena! Woot!

Greenyflower, if you're looking for a facial soap (not that you said you were or anything) you should try the BB Green Lettuce one. It's the only facial soap I've ever used that didn't turn my face red or make me break out (which Cetaphil does, despite so many sensitive girls swearing by it.) Just a random suggestion.

rkfinnell said...

Well if we're talking face soaps then Cetaphil without a doubt.

Serena said...

Woo-hoo, December, Dove girls rule! Darn it, I can't even use BB; that breaks me out, too.

I've never heard of Cetaphil. Is it good for sensitive skin? If I take a bath with Zest, Camay, or any of the other brands of soap, I break out in red splotches. Dove has so far been the only soap I can count on to not do that.

1. Ivory flakes, because I tend to favor products endorsed by porn stars.

2. Only one: Penthouse Forum (since I'm the primary source for all of the stories).

3. I prefer YOUR laptop.

4. No, right now I'm all out of love, which makes that song by Air Supply cruelly relevant. But I'm expecting a half-skid of love anytime now, along with some nice Bing Cherries.

5. Not since I saw what happened when they tried to do it at the nursing home.

6. Only if it's the same one from "Lord of the Flies", but this time every one of them is Piggie.

7. It depends if she's a redhead or not.

8. One of those swings that hangs over the bed. But then family dropped by unexpectedly, so I had to stuff my beanbag chair into it, and claim it was a heavybag for kickboxing. Now they come over every damned week to work out with me.

And what's THIS about Elvis passing? Then it appears that SOMEONE has been going around impersonating him. I need to be more vigilant about identity theft.

Serena said...

Puggy, I'm going to have to insist that you lay off the Ivory flakes; I don't want you going blind. If you really prefer MY laptop, we could perhaps negotiate a trade. LMAO at #6 and #8.:-)

If I decide to become an Elvis impersonator, are you going to insist on verifying my ID?

Hale McKay said...

I am biased because of my age and the music that was playing then, of course. Kurt (Nobrain) Cobain may have surpassed Elvis on the after-death gross money made, but if you take the longivity of their music into account, Cobain has yet to stand the test of time. With the exception of the Beatles, no other artist has had more of his songs covered by later artists than Elvis. Cobain isn't even a blip on that radar screen.

Ironically, in the case of Cobain, many people, including myself, never even heard of him until after his death. IT is a much younger crowd that has pushed Cobain's numbers over the top.

Of course their music and styles were apples and oranges - Elvis was more love songs, ballads - slow dance music. I'm not even sure what category Cobain falls under - punk? grunge?

Color me a non-conformist baby boomer.

Serena said...

You're certainly right about that, Mike. And just look at all the Elvis impersonators out there. And flying Elvii. As far as I know, there's no market for Cobain impersonators.

I'm not certain, but I think Nirvana was grunge.

Hale McKay said...

By the way, Serena, I liked your tribute to Elvis using his songs as part of the text.

It just so happens that last summer I employed the same idea on a post about Paul McCartney's divorce from Heather.

...And it just so happens that I dusted it off and it will be my offering over at Verbicidal Tendencies for Friday, 8/17.

And to the readers here, please drop in over there to read it. It's pretty good, if I don't say so myself!

Nice pic too, SJ.

Serena said...

Thank you, Mike. And I'll look forward to seeing your Paul v. Heather post at VT tomorrow.
