De-Mooned

myspace layout images

As you may have noticed -- and I know you did -- I somehow escaped situational psychosis under the last full moon. And lo and behold, it's happened again. I stayed completely normal -- and don't even think of belaboring the point with me -- during last night's full moon. See how rational I am? This is something of a record. Dare I hope it's a trend? I'm not sure what happened. I didn't change brands of tin foil, just wrapped the same old cheap stuff around my head, so it couldn't have been that. I didn't put up blackout curtains to keep the dangerous rays out, so I must have received the same exposure -- with no ill effects. I didn't hide out in the basement 'til the moon started waning, so that's not it. I can't explain it. All I know is that I'm sitting here safe and sound and as sane as you. I don't know how it happened, except to note that for some unfathomable reason nobody pissed me off, but I'll take it. I wonder if I can make it a Triple Crown next month?

Did you know that Tuesday comes from the Middle English word Twisda which, in turn, comes from the Old English Tiwes dæg, named after the Nordic god Tyr, who was the equivalent of the Roman war god Mars, and the Greek god Ares? Well, neither did I 'til I looked it up in Wiki. Moreover, I learned that in the Greek world, Tuesday (the day of the week of the Fall of Constantinople) is considered an unlucky day. The same is true in the Spanish-speaking world, where there's a proverb: En martes, ni te cases ni te embarques, meaning, "On Tuesday, neither get married nor begin a journey." For both Greeks and Spanish-speakers, the 13th of the month is considered unlucky if it falls on Tuesday, instead of Friday. In Judaism, on the other hand, Tuesday is considered a particularly lucky day, because in the first chapter of Genesis the paragraph about this day contains the phrase "it was good" twice.

In the Thai solar calendar, the day is named for the Pali word for the planet Mars, which also means "Ashes of the Dead." Kind of makes a run-of-the-mill old full moon pale in comparison, don't you think?

Oh, and the color associated with Tuesday is pink -- my color. How cool is that? I knew there was a reason why I like Tuesdays. Which reminds me, in business, particularly office work, studies have shown that Tuesday is usually the most productive day of the week.

Tiwes dæg is a great day for attacking these Words Gone Wild, don't you think?

I am not exactly certain about this, but I believe that all the names of the days of the week are derived from Norse mythology.

If there was a full moon then that explains why I took an ass whipping on the links.

I'm seriously laughing out loud over your definitions, Bilbo. You so funny.:-)

VE, do you prefer butter or jam or both on your toasted co-workers?:)

I think you're probably right about the Norse mythology, NYD. And about the full moon as well. I think we all take ass whippings then.:)

Kan, I'm sorry the moon rays are whipping you physically. I hope it lets you off the hook tonight. It didn't slow you down on the words, though. Great job!:)

You nailed "aloud to vote," Roxan. My pink looks red to you? Hmmmm. Looks pink to me.:)

I think that as I get older, the full moon exerts less and less influence on me.
I noticed that I had substantially fewer

I noticed fewer fleas this time around, too, Sling. I'm not sure whether it was the Frontline or voodoo.:)

oh crap...I'm supposed to wrap aluminum foil around my haid during the full moon to keep the weirds away?

For 51 years, I've suffered monthly bouts of weirds because I didn't practice safe mooning?

Oh well...why start now? ;)

Well, Skunk, the foil isn't fail-proof, but it can't hurt. Plus, it looks pretty. Shiny, you know. Try it next month. And if you'd like to send me a picture of your sparkly helmet, I'll post it.:-)
