Cupid, Draw Back Your Bow

I wanna know what love is, let’s talk about love
I want you to show me, I wanna feel it too
I wanna feel what love is, I want to feel it too
And I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah
I wanna know what love is...

(Foreigner, “I Want To Know What Love Is”)

Valentine’s Day is coming up next week. If you’re still alive to read this, you probably passed muster with your S.O. on the Christmas presents -- and it probably seems like a very short time ago. Now, you have to endure the stress of picking out the perfect Valentine’s gift. No wonder I heard there’s a hit out on Cupid.

Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day, aside from caving in to peer pressure to support the card and gift industry? Who the heck was St. Valentine, anyway?

Saint Valentine more than likely refers to one of three martyred saints of ancient Rome. The feast of St. Valentine was first decreed in 496 A.D. by Pope Gelasius I. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the saint whose feast was celebrated on the day now known as St. Valentine's Day was possibly one of three martyred men named Valentinus who lived in the late third century, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. The name Valentinus was popular in Late Antiquity, with its connotations of valens, "being strong".

As with most modern holidays, it is believed that the feast of St. Valentine was probably created with an eye toward superseding pagan holidays; in this case, the pagan holiday of Lupercalia. It wasn’t until fourteenth century England (and the influence of Geoffrey Chaucer) that the February 14th holiday became associated with romantic love.

As the countdown to Valentine’s Day begins, we’ll talk more about the holiday’s origins and its place in contemporary life. Meanwhile, if you see the Cupid, please don’t shoot him. He may be carrying some nice chocolates with my name on them.

Twisted Linguistics trudged forth through the snow to do their duty and round up these Words Gone Wild.

fo rtheirh – We think this might mean “Hell, yeah!” in one of the dead Romance languages.

scelected - Elected to office amid much scandal.

stench conflict - The Great Stink Wars.

sollisits - Sun worshippers.

ressemblent - One who looks like another.

dysregate - Non-conforming, misbehaving Reggae musician.

In keeping with the holiday, let’s all now take the “What's Your Love Type?” quiz.

Your Love Type: INTP

The Thinker

In love, you are honest and serious about commitment.
For you, sex is something you think about and desire a lot of the time.

Overall, you are pure in your affection and feelings.
However, you tend to be suspicious and distrusting at times.

Best matches: ENTJ and ESTJ

I’m sorry. Clearly, I’m not very good at love stuff. What IS an INTP (I Not Too Pissed?) – or an ENTJ or ESTJ? Would that be, like, Ewww, Not Tonight, Jerk? Or Easy Sweet Tart Jewel?

Your Love Type: INFJ

The Protector

In love, you strive to have the perfect relationship.
For you, sex is nearly a spiritual experience, a bonding of souls.

Overall, you have high expectations for any relationship you're in.
However, you tend to hold back a part of yourself.

Best matches: ENTP and ENFP

That told me nothing really.

I am not a fan of the Hallmark holiday personally and that is not because I have been single for....I am not going to put down the number, but let's just say I have had a girlfriend this decade and a good part of the last. OK, I am bitter.

I have NOT had a girlfriend...

That one word is important.

Kan, there just has to be ONE GIRL somewhere in south Florida that can attract your attention. Are you going to make me make it my mission to find her for you? Because I can DO matchmaking if I have to.:)

Valentines, Smalentines. I hate these organized holidays...like...like Christmas or Secretary's Day. I think we should celebrate April 16, Day of Refund or Payment. I think everyone should have their own calendar of holidays. You call into work - "I can't come in. I'm taking my personal Christmas." Then you lay in bed in chips and watching Andy Griffith.

I like the way you think, Corn Dog. A schedule of personal holidays works for me. I'd have to have a Whack-A-Mole Day, Spend the Day In Your Nightie Day, Lie Around Eating Bon-Bons While Watching Trash TV Day. You know, this could really take off.:)

I think love is way over rated. I would much prefer falling in "like" with someone. Let whatever happens from there, happen.

Awww, that's no fair. Mine came back as "HYCAM", which apparently means "Have You Considered A Monastery?". What a gyp!

I have to be quick. INFJ is intuitive, something, feeling, judgmental. Those are scores on a well known personality test, but I can't recall what all the initials stand for. If you google them, you'll probably find the test. Take care. See you soon.

That IS a gyp, because I have a strong feeling you're not monastery material. Pssst -- you can take it again. We just lie to get better scores.:)

I don't know, Roxan. Liking people is wonderful. So is being "in like." But when you can manage to actually fall in love with someone, what a rush, unlike any other.

Lesia, thanks for coming up for air long enough to fill me in on those acronyms. I hope the writing is going well. I want you to WIN!

I like the "Spend The Day In Your Nightie Day." (It would be interesting for all those who sleep in the nude, don't you think?)

Serena said...

Yeah, I think that would make a big difference, Mike. That would need its own special day -- Pull the Shades and Hang Out in Your Birthday Suit Day. LOL.

***Your Love Type: ENFP***

The Inspirer

In love, you are passionate and eager to develop a strong bond.
For you, sex should be playful, creative, and affectionate.

Overall, you are perceptive and bring out the best in your partner.
However, you tend to hold on to bad relationships after they've turned bad.

Best matches: INTJ and INFJ

LOOK; KANREI'S ONE OF MY TYPES.

"Spend The Day In Your Nightie Day."

Um...I never do... nope... really... not. I could ask S to join me, but I'm not sure he has a nightie that would look so hot with his beard.

You won't hear me complain if I get hit by Cupid's arrow! Oh! The pain...the suffering...why, I wonder is it so painful to fall in love? ;)

Your Love Type: ISFP

The Artist

In love, you feel deeply and experience intense emotions.
For you, sex is serious. It's how you best express your feelings.

Overall, you are laid back, warm, and a good listener.
However, you tend to seem lazy and disinterested sometimes.

Best matches: ESFJ and ENFJ

Well, the lazy bit is right!

Husband and I usually just about remember to get each other a card for Valentine's Day but that's it. Hey, we love each other every day (finger in throat!)

St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers and her day is 25th January. Even though I've missed it, I might write a little about her on my blog. I feel a post coming on ...

You missed my point. Love is important, but you can love someone without liking them. But, if you like the person you love that relationship is stronger and has a bond of more than just commitment.

Serena said...

Little Bird, if S looks pretty hot with the beard, chances are he won't need the nightie.:)

Lee, I tried to point Cupid your way, but he's not the brightest creature -- directionally challenged, and he lost his GPS unit. Trying again.

Liz, you're in good company. I think we all get "lazy" from time to time.

Roxan, sometimes I am dense as putty. Now I get it. And you're right. People do fall in love with other people (or THINK they do) and then wake up one morning and scream, "I don't even LIKE this person.":(
