Sunday Soporific

I'm not sure whether this picture amuses me or frightens me.

Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Robert Frost said you could -- and that they have to take you in when you have to go there. I can't imagine why I would want to. It took me approximately the first one-third of my life to figure out how to get out of there.

They say you can't live on love, but who knows, maybe you can.

There's no written rule that says you can't have dessert first. I say go for it.

What I saw of Live Earth yesterday was great! Dave Matthews and Smashing Pumpkins, the Foo Fighters, the Black-Eyed Peas, Joss Stone, and KT Tunstall all did stupendous sets. I've never been much of a Bon Jovi fan, but he was very good as well. Linkin Park, Phil Collins, The Police, Keith Urban, Alicia Keys -- all fabulous. And I think I'm in love with the lead singers from AFI and Keane.

Okay, now that the top-of-my head stuff is out of the way, here's what I really wanted to talk about today: UFOs.

There's a documentary,"Out of the Blue," which takes on the unenviable task of attempting to weed out the wackos from credible witnesses who say they've seen what looked like alien spacecraft. Such witnesses include former President Carter, who said, "I saw one, but I don't know where. It just disappeared," and Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper, who said he saw "this typical saucer shape, double-cylindrical shape, metallic."

"Out of the Blue" begins with an oddly inexplicable but undeniable incident that occurred in March 1997, known as the "Phoenix Lights." Hundreds if not thousands of people, many of whom were simply out to view the Hale-Bopp comet, reported seeing an array of lights and an enormous delta-shaped craft in the skies over Phoenix. The first report of a strange flying object came at about 8:20 P.M. from a former police officer in Paulden, Arizona. Numerous similar reports of an object in the sky above the 20-mile route between Phoenix and Tempe came in over the next forty minutes or so.

"It's coming across the sky," said witness Tim Ley of Phoenix, "and as it's moving, it's blocking and unblocking the stars. There was actually a shape."

"It passed right in front of us. It was just about right above eye length," said Mike Fortson. "My estimate of the size of the craft from the nose as it passed us where we lived to the end of the left wing that passed in front of us was over 5,000 foot long."

There was such an uproar about what people described seeing that ABC News devoted a news segment to it in 1997. At the time, then Arizona Governor Fife Symington called a news conference, spoofing the whole thing by bringing an "alien" into the room.

What Symington failed to say at the time was that he also had seen the object over Phoenix. But in "Out of the Blue," he says that "we all experienced a very exciting sighting of some kind of a craft of unknown origin. Nobody's ever been able to explain it. And most of us feel that it was definitely, you know, of alien origin. Enormous. Inexplicable."

Symington is an Air Force veteran, and a pilot. When asked whether he was worried about speaking out, he said, "I know what I saw and what I believe and I'm not afraid to say it publicly. And I'm, I'm really not concerned about somebody's opinion about that, frankly."

Do I believe Earth is visited by UFOs? I don't disbelieve it because, after all, I believe that just about anything is possible. What do you think?

If some jackass can set out to drown puppies, then, yeah, ANYTHING is possible!

But seriously, I don't disbelieve, either. Why should we be the universal endpoint?

EWWWW! The picture!!!!! poor cat or poor baby??? now that is the question! Help it will scratch the baby!... help the baby is biting its tail!...

Why? O Why dont the Aliens ever think of appearing in the eastern sky!!!

Serena! I have no idea about a dream number, but you can check about it on dreams interpretation at Yahoo's astrology section!

Precisely, Greeny. I think it would be awfully presumptuous of us to think we're the universal endpoint. One would, of course, very much hope that other life forms aren't puppy-drowning jackasses.

I know, Mona. It's kind of hard to decide whether to feel sorrier for the baby or the kitty. No aliens in the Eastern skies? Ever?

I may check out that astrology site. I'm curious about why I dreamed about the number 28.:-)

The babe and the Kat are worth a second look. Yeah, I believe anything is possible, including strangers from a strnge land.

I love the photo of the kit-kat!

If you had any sense and you knew what life was like on earth would you come visiting?
I don't think I would I would go off deep in space and look for somewhere people can live in peace and wouldn't so mess :-)

Best wishes

Annie

I'm sorry, but there is just TOO much universe for it to be "just us". Now do I think we'll ever come in contact with anyone...I think it's doubtful... but who knows!!

I believe that,in the future,we have mastered time travel,and the UFO's are us...Oddly enough,we have evolved into a race of cat-eating mutants.
..but that's just a theory.

Serena said...

I guess I don't think anything much is "too" strange, Steve.:)

You have a point, Annie. Which may be why if they're around, they're only doing fly-bys.

You're right, Snow Elf. There's a LOT of universe, in which we're just a little speck.

I know some mutants, Sling. If they're eating cats, I'm turning them in.:-)

Sometimes I wonder if the universe wasn't designed in the same manner of an ant farm and for the same reasons. Having said that, if pure evolution is correct, there is no reason why other species shouldn't be out there.

Serena said...

There's a certain logic to the anthill theory, T. Whatever the blueprint is, I do believe there are other species out there. And some of them are probably not half as weird as some of the 2-legged species on Earth.

Are you blogging about UFOs because it's the 60th anniversary of the Roswell Sighting, or because the aliens told you to...?

Serena said...

Oh, both, Camille -- except that they told me not to talk about the latter.:-)

I find it impossible to believe that in the vastness of the universe that only the planet earth would have intelligent life.

The are probably millions of planets with life. It's just a matter of how advanced they are. I would think that many are are far more advanced than us Terrans.

I believe earth has been visited by E.T., and are probably the source of many of our ancient legends and superstitions.

Why haven't they contacted us - and I don't mean all of these so-called abductees? We aren't ready in their eyes. We are too barbaric and under-developed.

Also, some have probably checked us out and decided there was no intelligent life here.

A man who used to be in the defence dpartment and whose job it was to investigate all reportings recently retired and said he had gone into the job very skeptical but was leaving it believing alien life was far more likely to exist than not.

Poor pups! How can people be so horrid? But I suppose it was standard practice to get rid of unwanted animals in that way not so long ago.

I think that baby is about to get bitten on the leg!

If you view the bible as a historical document, which it was, then it might shed some light. I seem to remember a passage about a "meeting of the worlds," but I no longer have a bible. We aren't the only creatures with brains capable of abstract thought. They're out there. The question is are they around here? Our own stealth planes, which get flown quite low and are hard to see even close, especially at night. Who, unfamiliar with one, would be able to tell a 50' wingspan from a 5000' span if they were surprised and could only see it momentarily?

I think most of the sightings are explainable but some are unexplainable.
I think they ARE UFO's.
