Chances Are

And, if you think you could,
Well, chances are your chances are awfully good.

~(Johnny Mathis, "Chances Are")

I've talked about serendipity before. I don't want to run it into the ground, but ... God love serendipity!

Serendipity is defined as

1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
3. An instance of making such a discovery.

Is it really so random, though? Accidental? I don't think so. Rather, I think serendipity is a key element of the rule of kismet. We've always heard that things happen for a reason. I believe that to be true. When something occurs that appears to be by happenstance -- serendipitous -- I think it's simply part of the "plan" unfolding just as it was intended to. Every little thing, for better or for worse, happens exactly as it must, as it was intended to. It can happen no other way, if you ask me.

I am thankful for the apparently serendipitous events that happen in my life. What I need shows up exactly when I need it. What I want, even if I didn't know I wanted it, is freely given. What is bad for me is yanked away. I might yell and rebel a little but, in the end, it's the best possible result. And the Force, which I'll call The Cosmos for lack of a better term, knows it. When that which has been longed for suddenly appears as a precious gift, we call it serendipity. Chance. Coincidence. Perhaps it is simply the synchronicity which is the foundation of kismet. Fate. Karma. Providence. Whatever it is, it is always gratefully accepted.

This is about as close to religion as I get, though it's not strictly a religious type of belief at all. I daresay such thoughts would be treated as heresy in many quarters. I stay out of those quarters. I always say, "Whatever gets you through the night." This works for me, and that's all I ask of it.

What Your Sleeping Position Says

You are calm and rational person with a good deal of balance in your life.
Friends consider you to be kind, caring, and truly loyal.
You are easy going and trusting. However, you are too sensible to fall for mind games.
Open to the world, you are not afraid to be yourself.

If you don't get enough sleep, you are: Able to cope

It's hard to sleep next to you because: You're a bed hog

***What Your Sleeping Position Says***

You are confident and ready to tackle life.
You are pretty vain and happy with your physical appearance.
You are born to be the center of attention, and you're unhappy on the sidelines.
You're always up for trying something new - in and out of bed!

If you don't get enough sleep, you: Look like hell

It's hard to sleep next to you because: You toss and turn all night

Lies I tell ya. All lies.

I used to like that song until that quasi-incest movie came out with the same name. Although Robert Downey Jr. was excellent in it as he is in all his movies.

I used to do a Johnny Mathis impression until my voice changed.

I've probably said that phrase more times in my lifetime than I care to remember.."things happen for a reason." but these days I'm not so sure it's always applicable.
What about a case of a small child who is kidnapped, brutally sexually assaulted and then murdered. I for the life of me can not see the reason for it.
As adults we put things out there as we live our lives, we for lack of a better term build up karma but I can't figure out why such bad things would come back to an innocent.
I think we, including myself use the term to try to explain or accept the unacceptable.
Just my thoughts.

You have to love serendipity. Of course, if you're looking for something in particular, you're going to be more likely to find it. How many times before might it have happened to have been there or occurred in the same place under similar circumstances? I'm not a believer in too much hooey like "The Secret." It's recycled from the 19th century, but serendipity does happen. I hope for lots of things, karma is one of them. Whether or not its true, or will happen would be serendipitous. Have a good Friday and then have a better weekend, SJ.

I don't think I'm familiar with that movie, Roxan. Probably just as well.

I understand exactly what you're saying, TC. And yet, I do always wonder if the evil things in the world aren't part of some gestalt that we can't understand. I think that when a tragedy happens which, for example, causes a law to be enacted to save others from the same tragedy, perhaps it's the sacrifice of one for the good of the many. I don't know.

I hope for lots of things, karma is one of them. Whether or not its true, or will happen would be serendipitous.

Words to live by, Charles. You have a great weekend, too.:)

You aced that wonky word, Camille. I had no clue.:)

Oh, yowzer, Pinks! Sorry about that. I'm still a novice, you know, plying my mojo on a learners permit. I'll try to do better and get you a sunny Sunday.:-)

I find that Fridays are quite serendipitous - you spend all week wishing the weekend was here - and lo and behold on Friday - it's here! Now that's serendipity.

..."Though you wear a silly grin".
Johnny Mathis has a great voice, he can hit a note without flinching a muscle..
Kismet
Chance
Karma, these are interesting concepts that I think that us folks in the Western World, do not play close enough attention to. You can go through life fully satisfied that your life is where it will end up in the end..
But then something, or someone comes along and changes your entire perspective on things..
It could jog you a little,
It could jog you a lot.
It could make you smile,
It could change your life.
REALLY Change your life!!
Like Hitting the Lotto..
Or falling over a cliff!
Boy....What a ramble!
Finding your Blog Serena is Kismet!!!
...And like hitting the Lotto!!!
Thanks sweetie..xobgxoxoxox

You already know how much I believe in this stuff. I think the universe talks to me all the time.

Serendipity rocks!

--snow

@Tc: I don't believe in reincarnation in any form because I believe God gives us one soul and that's what makes us special. However, my mother has a book that says these things happen to us--even as children--because in a past life we have already pre-agreed to the punishments for our previous sins.
I don't believe it at all, but I just wanted to share.

Serena said...

You are absolutely right, Mike. Here's to serendipity!:)

I stay off cliffs, G. I hear what you're saying, though. It is amazing when something happens that completely changes your life, completely serendipitously. Now, go buy your Lotto ticket. And if you win, it will be serendipity at work -- and you must share.:-)

Yes, Snow, that's it exactly. The universe does speak to us, as long as we're willing to open our ears and listen.:)

My life relies on serendipity. I came to my recent decision because of it.

I also read a book titled it when I was 8 or 9. It was about a little pink seamonster looking for her mom and finding a bunch of great friends along the way.

Serendipty...is the fact I'm still here and still keep meeting up with me each day!

A pink sea monster, Seeley? Cool! Your life is going to SO change and be SO enriched because of your recent serendipitous decision.:)

LOL, Lee. I keep meeting myself in dark hallways, too, and didn't realize why. Now I know!:)

Did you hit the trifecta, G?:-)

Chances are.......

MLMurff and I shook our heads at the "serendipity-ness" we discovered in one of my blog postings on the blues this week. Turns out we both are deeply enamored of the following song lyrics....

"I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island."

I love that, Quid. And I miss the hell out of you and Dragonfly. I think we need to unlock the Castle gates. I'm going to work on that. Hugs to you both 'til then.

My Sleeping Position says, "You are always on the run. Unfortunately it is from the authorities. You need to relax, sleep out of your clothes, and not keep a gun under your pillow."

Wow! These tests are ACCURATE!

Serena said...

They are AMAZINGLY accurate, Puggy. However, I recommend sleeping with the gun under the pillow but IN your clothes, just in case you need to shoot first and run fast.
