Another Day, Another (Half) Dollar

I love where I work. My job itself has its ups and downs and, since I work only part-time, Lord knows I'm not getting rich at it. Some days are very quiet and peaceful, like today. Days like this tend to balance out the days that are pure insanity straight from the lower circles of hell. The perks are worth it, though. There are two dogs here today, a Beagle and a Golden Retriever. This is a very dog-friendly building, where pretty much every day is Bring Your Dog to Work Day. It's not a large building. There's our suite and 3 insurance agencies upstairs, and another law firm and a company that publishes a construction industry magazine downstairs. The animal-friendly atmosphere ensures that there's at least one dog cruising through my office every day, which is why I keep dog treats on hand.

The dress code around here is also pretty laid back and informal. The insurance people wear jeans and "office casual" most of the time. My boss always wears a shirt and tie, because you just never know when somebody's going to walk in and he likes to at least look professional. My work clothes alternate between pants and skirts/simple dresses, never anything "fussy." I'll only wear a suit and heels if we have something really important scheduled and I have to be there. I generally don't wear jeans to work unless I know there's nothing scheduled and I'm not going to have to go to the courthouse for anything. There's no boss today, no clients, and no reason to go to the courthouse, so I'm in jeans.

Just about everybody in here has a TV in their office. I have a teeny little flat-screen on my desk, and I do mean teeny. I have a radio or CD player on in the mornings, and the TV in the afternoons when ... just about everybody in the building is watching their soaps. The insurance people have cable on their TVs, but I don't, mainly because my boss won't pay for it. Which is fine; I don't need it. If there's some earth shattering news, I can always go to somebody else's office and see CNN.

We have free parking, which is a relative rarity downtown these days. I have Internet access here, obviously. We use it for a lot of business-related activities. It saves a lot of legwork now that a lot of court records are accessible online. I do love having the freedom to read my own e-mail and do my own online stuff during the work day.

All in all, it's a great place to work and I couldn't care less that I'm not making the big bucks. I've been there and done that. This is better.

Puddles Velvet Ears??? I must be a bunny. A wet bunny. LOL

I like where I work and I'm often asked why I would do physical labor when I could be sitting at a desk all day. They don't realize that as a writer I am sitting at a desk more than they think.

Sounds like you've got a nice laid-back environment at work.

I like having my own say, and wouldn't like it if somebody started charging me for it.

Sounds like my sort of job.
Sounds like my job.
It's a good life.

Don't have enough time in the day though to get round all the blogs I like to visit.

Clover Floppy Ears signing in. Your job sounds like mine except I wear jeans every day and have no TV in my office. Just my MP3 player. Oh, and I work in medical instead of legal, and I am in Miami, and I work full time. Your job sounds nothing like mine actually. Wanna trade?

If you don't like what you are doing, you are guaranteed to suck at it. At least, that's what they told us at Clown College.

Aw, Puddles, with the Velvet Ears -- how cute is that? Each person does what they feel best suited for, and what best suits them -- that's the bottom line. And as long as you like it, that's what's important.

I'm sending you $1, Ms. Biscuit Lemondrop, because I have something to say, per se. Cute, cute bunny name!

I know, Liz. So many blogs, so little time to spend perusing. I hate it that so many of my favorites get ignored sometimes, but I know everybody knows we all get to them when we can.

Of course, I'll trade, Clover Floppy Ears. You're in -- Miami. And aren't you required to sleep on the job from time to time?

TFG, I got expelled from clown school. Are you putting your degree to work for you?:)

Why,yes,I have. I've found my niche in the adult entertainment industry. Perhaps, you've seen me in Naughty Circus, Vol. 9 and Rubber Chicken Seduction.

SJ, baby! Me be in the land of IZ! it's like having the video from your sidebar following me around all day. Your office sounds like everything me sees here. Me hasn't seen a suit once since me got there. Me figgers that neckties don't go well with aloha shirts.

p.s. Some folks buy the ugliest shirts imaginable. stay tuned for posties...STOMP

Sounds like a super place to relax, I mean work. Now if you could get a big raise, it would be that much better.

Serena said...

Sorry, T, I didn't see Naughty Circus. I do, however, think I might have seen the Rubber Chicken Seduction. I'm not sure; I kept my eyes closed a lot. But I do remember seeing a large, rubbery looking chicken who was missing a few feathers. Was that you?! Wow, now I can say I know a movie star.:)

Scary, honey! I'll bet you can feel Iz's spirit all over the place. I am SO pleased to hear of your good fashion sense. I just knew you'd pick pretty aloha shirts and know not to wear ties with them. Do keep the Island Posties coming. They rock!

P.S. You're up at VT today.

A raise would be great, Steve, but shoot, my boss is about as poor as I am. We're definitely not in it for the money. LOL.

We have dogs where I work too...hang on after re-reading the post you meant animals...(That wasn't even nice,I apologize most profusely)

I work alone in an office by myself. (Which I guess if I say "alone", the "myself" part is kind of redundant.)

And you can't change your name now Serena, nice try, you are stuck!

Serena said...

I forgive you for insulting the doggies, MXI. LOL.

With all these names -- SJ, CY, and now CM -- I'll never be "alone.":)

Are they hiring at your place????

I can pretty much dress the way I ant, at least under the provisions of public nudity laws.

In the summer time I wear shorts and t-shirts. Waiting patiently for the steady 70s, 80s and 90s.

Serena said...

Wow, Mike, I'd say you have the best job if you can wear shorts. Um, they're not the plaid Bermudas with sox and sandals that you've mentioned, are they?:)

I want to work there. I want to work anywhere, in fact. Well, almost anywhere.

Serena, I just had a word verification that I really liked (oh, my, how sad is that?!)

I was writing about enjoying blogging and the word was oxgasy.

Knowing your liking for words, I thought I'd share it.

Serena said...

Queen Corn, I hope you do find a job that suits you to a tee. I don't know what that means. I've heard it all my life, and I know what it means but not what it MEANS. Do they mean "to a tee" or "to a T?" What would the T mean? If it's tee, do they mean shirt or golf thingie? But you take my meaning -- I want you to find something you really, really like. As for my job, pursuant to my Monday post, now that I've said in public that I like it I'll probably lose it. LOL.

Liz, that's a wonderful word! Evocative of so many different scenarios. Thanks for sharing.
