And Then He Kissed Me...

The latest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes, and Patti Smith.

I’ve loved R.E.M. since the moment I heard their very first song, and “Losing My Religion” was practically an anthem for its time.

And, yeah, I’m admitting to my age when I confess that I adored the Ronettes when they were the idols of budding “bad girls” everywhere.

Well, he walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to dance.
He looked kinda nice so I said well I might take a chance.
When he danced he held me tight,
And when he walked me home that night,
All the stars were shining bright,
And then he kissed me. . .

('Then He Kissed Me,' The Ronettes)

The night we met, I knew I needed you so
And if I had the chance, I'd never let you go.
So won't you say you love me,
I'll make you so proud of me.
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go.

So won't you, please, (be my, be my baby)
Be my little baby, (my one and only baby)
Say you'll be my darlin', (be my, be my baby)
Be my baby now, (my one and only baby)
Wha-oh-oh-oh.

('Be My Baby,' The Ronettes)

My best friend from the 8th grade on had long dark hair and could so do the Ronnie Spector look. She could twist and contort her hair into a big-ass Ronette-style do and line her eyes until she looked like a raccoon that had lost a fight. When she put on white lipstick and a mini-skirt, she looked just like a rocker chick ready to record her next hit song. I was so jealous. My mother wouldn’t let me have mini-skirts, but that was no biggie. I simply rolled over the waistbands of the skirts I had until they were scandalously short. But the hair and the makeup were a real problem for a freckled redhead. My hair simply would not “do that” and heavy eyeliner and pale lipstick made me look more like a consumptive zombie than one of rock’s bad girls. Consequently, I went through high school looking so geekishly normal it was depressing. Of course, that could go a long way toward explaining why I only wanted to date boys who looked like, say, Joey Ramone.

Speaking of weird hair, Ronnie Spector’s ex, Phil Spector, is awaiting trial on murder charges. In the last news photo I saw of him, he was sporting what had to be the biggest, unruliest Afro in the history of the world.

In Twisted Linguistics today, we see these Words Gone Wild.

They were bad girls? Dressed like that? OK...

I look at the list of people getting in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I think to myself that this must be some new definition for "Rock and Roll" that I missed. R and B, Soul, Alternative, etc are all wonderful genres of music with their own histories and stars, but they are not rock n' roll. The museum seems to be a general music museum which is fine, but change the name =D

You have the natural talent of rocking the boat, thwarting the system.
And while this may not seem big, it can be.
It's people like you who serve as the catalysts to major cultural changes.
You're just a bit behind the scenes, so no one really notices.

Hmmm....

Patti Smith is my all time favorite rock n roll artist. She turned 60 today.

When they strutted their stuff in skin-tight black pants, stiletto heels, big hair, and big eyeliner, they looked like very bad girls -- for the times.

I agree with you about what qualifies as Rock. To me, Hip-Hop and Rap are to Rock as Venus is to Mars.

Hey, you got nailed on that "catalyst to cultural change" deal. It's true.:)

Rain, I didn't know it was Patti's birthday. I like her a lot, too.

This is so dead on me it isn't even funny.

You rock the boat, Roxan? LOL. Dang, this one was dead on.:)

Your Luck Quotient: 51%

You have an average luck quotient.
There's been times when you've been extremely lucky... but also times when you've been very unlucky.
You probably know that you can make your own luck in life, if you're open to it.
So listen to your intuition as much as you can. It's right more often than you might expect.

I'm a rocker, too. A boat rocker, that is.

Rain, I always liked Patti Smith, too. When I was in Burke's bookstore, I thumbed through a great biography of her. If you don't have it, you should get it (lots of nice pictures), and if you get it, order it from Burke's!

I loved the 50's girl groups, SJ. Some friends and I did a spoof of them at a company Christmas party one year. We performed Leader of the Pack and everytime it got to the motorcycle rumble, a guy friend of ours rode across the stage on a tricycle. Or was it a banana bike? I can't recall. I'll have to dig up the pictures and see.

I'm not surprised so many varied kinds of music groups are inducted into the R & R Hall - isn't it located someplace weird in Michigan or Ohio?

Fun post, SJ!

Those old 50s and 60s girl groups had it going on. Leader of the Pack was classic. I'd love to see those pictures!

I loved Then I Kissed Him! And I only discovered REM recently but like them lots now. Although I am convinced that when they write their songs, they pick words at random out of a dictionary and just put them together as they come.

Your natural talent is interpersonal relations and dealing with people.
You communicate well and are able to bring disparate groups together.
Your calming presence helps everything go more smoothly.
People crave your praise and complements.

That is so NOT me!!!!

You are both very knowledgeable and creative.
You tend to be full of new ideas and potential - big potential.
Ideas like yours could change the world, if you build them.
As long as you don't stop working on your dreams, you'll get there.

Liz, I think you do communicate well and provide a calming influence.:)

SM, I'm delighted to hear you work with a bunch of such lucky people. Um, I don't know, I think I'd have to draw the line at hairy armpits on the "hot" barometer. LOL.

Steve, looks like you scored as pretty lucky, too. AND creative and knowledgeable. Can't argue with that.:)

I loved the paragraph about the mini-skirts and all that and Joey Ramone was sexy!

Oooo, yeah, Laurie, Joey was sexy as all get-out. I know some of these "kids" are wondering who the hell that is. LOL.
