Cold, Hard Facts

I was so dismayed to hear that James Kim was found dead, and only a mile from the car. Apparently, he'd actually traveled about eight miles but had become disoriented and somehow circled back. When I saw news footage of how rugged the country was, dotted with cliffs with dropoffs into creeks and rivers, I was afraid of that. His body was found in a creek. So, so sad.

I've seen two Amber alerts today. The first one was resolved, with the child safely recovered. The second is very disturbing to me. A 3-year-old girl from Florida on vacation in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with her mother and grandmother disappeared from a hotel laundry room. Scary.

A 3-year-old boy from a nearby county disappeared yesterday afternoon after wandering away from home. Thankfully, he was found with his dog late last night, no worse for wear.

(And while we're on the subject of children, how about this Ohio bitch who microwaved her 28-day-old baby? They ought to fry her ass.)

Anybody outside tonight around here would not fare well. It's positively frigid, with high winds and some snow blowing about. We may make it back up to 30 tomorrow. Brrrr.

Shopping today was not fun. I don't know how many times I was tempted to brain some mindless person with my purse. I did, however, manage to snag the last portable DVD player in one store -- at $17.00 off the already very good sale price. That made me smile.

As did this -- my boss's daughter spoke a few words last night, the first time she's spoken (or shown any awareness) since her November 16th accident. :)

I'm not really in the mood to do Twisted Linguistics tonight, so how about this -- I'll put them up and you all do whatever you want with them. You can define them, write stories with them. Whatever. Just ... amuse me.

I picked up this challenge from Liz's blog (Finding Life Hard? in the sidebar). It took me a surprisingly few minutes to come up with my own list.

TEN THINGS I WILL NEVER DO.

1. Give in to old age.
2. Learn calculus.
3. Eat okra or oysters.
4. Say I'm sorry when I'm not; i.e., apologize when I haven't done anything.
5. Lose my love of the humorous, the ironic, and the outrageous.
6. Wear sensible shoes.
7. Take life or myself too seriously.
8. Go gray before I'm about 80.
9. Join a cult.
10. Stop over-spending on really good coffee.

This is a slew of bad news tonight. What's wrong Serena? Where is that joy we have come to expect here?

I have been expecting a Discovery special on their rescue all week. The news of Kim's death is very sad, but at least they found the body quickly and there is no wondering for the family. They can start their healing.

Serena good. Serena just too tired to play with funky words. Serena cold, too. The wind chill is below zero.

Hey, they found that little girl, so that's good news. Her father picked her up without permission.

This is true about the Kim family having at least some resolution which will enable them to begin the healing process.

That is great about the girl.

I feel you on the tired. I am healthy again, but drained from getting that way. It sucks that you feel worse after being sick. Ironic, huh?

Serena said...

Ironic, yes, but completely normal. Illness drains you; there's no getting around that. It'll probably be another couple of days before you feel like yourself again. I hope you're still resting and taking care of yourself.:)

It is good news about the little girl and your boss's daughter.

But as for the microwaving: I can't even think about that it's so horrendous.

From the bit in the middle of your post it sounds like you're living in the Yorkshire moors and look what that did to Cathy and Heathcliff! It's enough to make a normal person kick a few shins 'accidentally' when shopping!

Hey I am with you on agreeing not to ever try to learn Calculus in my life. Calculus???

Good coffee is essential to life!

I'm a bit confused about the little girl in the hotel laundry room. That's not somewhere the guest are usually allowed. Especially not children.

Believe me, Liz, I'd make an awful Cathy. I don't do suffering, deprivation, or frigid moors well. LOL.

Anon, I picked Calculus because it was closer to the top of my alphabetized list than, say, Sanskrit or the Xylophone.:)

I don't know about the laundry room, Roxan. Maybe the hotel has a small laundry room where guests can do their laundry? It was the River Terrace Hotel in Gatlinburg, TN.

I checked out the hotel and there is something fishy about this kidnapping unless it wasn't the laundry room she was abducted from. The hotel doesn't even have an exercise room and there is no word about a laundry room for guests.
BTW the reviews for the hotel say it is a pretty nasty place to stay.

Kim should have stayed put.....but he was desperate to save his family. I have fished right where they got lost, its rough territory but towns are everywhere....

Amazing how 5 miles seems susch a short distance in a car, and how long a distance it is when there is five feet of snow and you are tired and hungry....

Sad deal
