American Beatific

Your Christmas is Most Like: A Christmas Story

Loving, fun, and totally crazy.
Don't shoot your eye out!

James and Kati Kim and their two young daughters had been missing since November 25th when they left the Pacific Northwest en route home to San Francisco after a Thanksgiving visit.

When I heard last night that a woman and two children believed to be the missing Kims had been found near Grant’s Pass, Oregon, I assumed the worst. Nothing was said about whether they were dead or alive, so I was delighted to hear this morning that Kati Kim and her girls were in remarkably good shape after their ordeal. Apparently, the family had turned off onto the wrong road and their vehicle got stuck in snow, leaving them stranded. James Kim is, unfortunately, still missing. He set out on foot this past Saturday to seek help, clad only in tennis shoes, sweater, and light jacket against the harsh weather. I hope he’s found alive.

Robert Gates as new Secretary of Defense – what’s your opinion? Frankly, anything CIA, ex or not, scares me.

Well she was an American girl.
Raised on promises,
She couldn’t help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else,
After all it was a great big world,
With lots of places to run to,
Yeah, and if she had to die,
Tryin she had one little promise
She was gonna keep.

- Tom Petty, ‘American Girl’

My morning took off with a bang. Practically literally. It was freezing cold, so I had my little heater in the bathroom going. Not yet being acclimated to winter, I forgot that if I have the heater on, I can’t use the hair dryer, thanks to the eccentric wiring in my house. Naturally, I turned on the hair dryer and -- bam. There went the power. We flipped the switches on the circuit breakers, to no avail. Some of the house’s circuits are still on fuses, so the husband finally had to make a trip to the hardware store for fuses while I finished getting ready in the dark. I had no idea what I looked like until I got to work. That's always fun. Not.

For a little fun with Twisted Linguistics, we turn to today’s “vocabulary” list,

cirtified
envalope magicaly apeared
deaprting
mivie
maine charachters
thanbks
motiuon pictiure
upsoide
I'm not any professional just wrtie one piece
rayalty
cicle cell animia
mnagazine
beatiful
profesures
...really get piisd off
nuptuals

with which we’ll do this:

The profesure was a Maine characters, real Down East rayalty. Her cicle cell animia slowed her down not at all, but she did really get piisd off when a cirtified mivie maker ripped off her life story in a mnagazine with no thanbks and didn’t even spell her name right. Certainly, there was no upsoide to that. And then one day an envalope magicaly appeared inviting the profesure to the premiere of the motiuon pictiure based on the article based on her life, which he promised would be a beatiful event. So, the big night arrived and she dressed in her old beatnik clothes and went to the gala. Chancing upon the mivie maker after the film, the profesure asked him why he had so disrespected her in both the mag article and the movie.

He said, “I'm not any professional just wrtie one piece.”

She said, “You should have known better” before kicking him in the nuptuals and deaprting.

I was relieved as well partially. It seems he went for help and is still missing last I heard. I hope they find him. He needs to watch more Discovery Channel. "I Shouldn't Be Alive" tells you all about these things then Survivorman tells you how to live through them. Great resource and you really never know.

They didn't find him today, which means another night exposed to the elements if he's still alive. It's very rugged country, with cliffs and rivers. You're right, we never know when we're going to need survival skills and the presence of mind to use them.

I don't know alot about him, but I am going to trust the President and his adviosrs....Gates does represent change and a new direction. So at this point, anything different is good.....

It can't get much worse...

I hope they find that guy.....Just a couple of days ago a guy was rescued in the Olympic mountain range after trappped in the snow for 13 days....he survived in his car.....

The moral of the story is, always prepare for the worst when travling through snow counrty.....

I hope you're right about Gates. It was time for a change -- Rumsfeld was a real loose cannon.

Re James Kim, there is still room for optimism. Like you say, people have been rescued before after long periods in the wilderness. He's on foot, though, with no equipment. The news said tonight that he was wearing 2 pairs of pants when he left the car, and they found one pair today. That doesn't sound good.
