Nanny Nation

You've probably heard the term "Nanny Nation" before. Essentially, it refers to the current trend of over-protecting citizens, by legislation if necessary, during every conceivable activity from cradle to grave.

That said, get a load of this. Zachary Christie is a first-grade student in Newark, Delaware. Young Zachary was a typical 6-year-old boy until he got kicked out of school this week and now faces 45 days in reform school. His crime? He brought a weapon to school; i.e., a camping utensil which functions as a fork, spoon, and knife. Good Lord, people! This was a little boy who brought his Cub Scouts thingie to school to use at lunch.

Where is someone in authority with some sense here? The child didn't bring a gun, sword, or bomb to school with nefarious intentions. He wasn't planning a massacre. He's a little boy who's loving his Cub Scout experience. He brought his camping utensil for lunch. I used to take my favorite lunch box to school, complete with thermos and spork-like utensil. The box itself was metal, of course, and probably wouldn't make it past the metal detectors these days. And I suppose my spork would be confiscated as a weapon of mass destruction and land me in the baby hoosegow. Times have certainly changed -- and not always for the better. I'm all for Zero Tolerance when it comes to guns and drugs in schools. Punishing kids for Cub Scout gear or possession of an aspirin tablet is ridiculous.

When it comes to matters of security, would you rather see officials be:
Over-protective
Lackadaisical
Uber-vigilant
Observant, but using common sense

We get the kind of idiocy we elect and put up with. Time to quit putting up with it.

And that means at the school board level, too. Tell the teachers' union to pound sand, and ELECT common sense.

I've had it since 1959...hehehehe

The question is, Skunk, why is the public continually electing these idiots? Is it a new mentality, or are the signs just not obvious at election time? I agree that it's time to quit putting up with it and put some common sense in public office.:)

It wouldn't have gotten you kicked out of school in 1959, Galen. Today, however, that bazooka attachment would probably land you in Juvie for a good long stretch.:)

Hey, SJ! What has happened to common sense in our country? I feel so sorry for the little boy. My grandson carries one of those contraptions as do I in my purse. I used it often at the office to unjam printers and copiers!! Blessings!

I hear you, Marion. I don't even know what all weapons are in my purse. Cool heads and common sense definitely need to seize control.:)

I'm hugely in favor of shock & awe, /t. In fact, I practice it every chance I get. I haven't had an opportunity to try my hand at waterboarding yet, mainly because I can't get the neighbor's 8-year-old commie extremist juvenile delinquent to stand still long enough.:-)
