Observations on a Workday

A friend sent me that picture (thank you, Miss Lucy), and it set me to wondering -- am I appreciated?

I think I am, though you couldn't prove it by my paychecks. I've worked since I was 16, and have had some very good jobs. I've been lucky enough to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time when there was a promotion or better job available. I lucked into my current job by virtue of being in the right place at a very bad time; i.e., the funeral home after my last boss died. This is a fun job, and you can't beat the part-time schedule. It gives me a lot of autonomy while keeping me on my toes and making me think. It doesn't pay for squat, but I like it possibly better than any job I've ever had. Every January, I tell myself that I'm going to have to look for a better paying job this year and then ... I don't. I guess I figure that as long as I can earn enough to meet my needs, I might as well continue doing something I actually enjoy.

And they do say that less is more. I'd certainly concur with that statement when it comes to big hair, heavy makeup, and perfume. I'm not so sure it applies in the case of chocolate, amour, and ... salary and benefits. I get by, though, and I count myself fortunate. Not everyone can say that.

What about you? Do you enjoy what you do for a living, feel appreciated, and consider yourself well compensated?

And now let's enjoy a few Words Gone Wild.

Preay tell - Telling beforehand that you're going to pray?

amont - Lamont's half-wit twin, who's the size of a baby mountain.

tea shirt - Shirt worn for tea rituals which may not be worn when drinking coffee or anything else.

rediculous - I'm not getting anything here. What do you guys think?

axious - Obliterating those pesky IOUs.

If it's Monday, it's Dressup Day. I'm wearing a gray skirt with pink pin stripes, pink sweater, black hose, and black shoes with heels and ankle straps. And you?

I don't have a job, but back in the day when I did have one, I liked it. The pay was very good for that time.

Miss Ethel, don't you ever worry about being appreciated.

Now see...if you'd been on global holidays like me, this never would have happened at work. You'd be dead rotting at home instead...oh wait, that would probably be me...

Ed & Jeanne said...

Or wait...perhaps we should all do some comments heard around the office that week:
1. Boy its dead around here
2. What a deadbeat, he never answers his phone
3. Jeez...try not to type too fast, you might wake up the dead!
4. Alright, who didn't bathe today?
5. (from his manager) Ok, good review...thanks for your insight.

Twice as hard for half the money, Galen? Hmmmm. Most of the time, I don't really work all that hard -- which is definitely one of the perks. Hey, settle down! I'll let you borrow my shoes and stockings any time.:) Sorry about that cool shower. Brrrrr!

Not to worry, Miss Lucy. I know it could always be worse. I'm lucky I don't have to work in that candy factory.:-)

LOL at your office comments, VE. I swear, I still can't wrap my head around some guy sitting dead at his desk for 5 days and NOBODY NOTICED.:)

P.S. What are global holidays? Should I be demanding them?

For moi, /t.? I'm so honored! And I don't mind a bit if you're channeling von Schiller; still sounds good.:)

Oh my god, that poor man!
And what about his family, did they not wonder why he didn't come home???
That is just so crazy!
Well, you sure got our g-man all in a twitter with those black hose and black shoes with the ankle straps, LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Little Wing said...

Oh yea, I LOVE my job!!!

Serena said...

LW, I'm thinking the poor man must have lived alone. Otherwise, I can't imagine someone not trying to find out where he was. Assuming that story's true and not apocryphal, it's just unbelievable. I'm glad you like your job!:)

P.S. I think G's calmed down now.:-)

/t.! I forgot to comment on

rediculous: the sequel

So, where might one obtain the original Diculous?

I love my job! It is a vacation job, I realize this and I will be returning to reality soon, but, for now, this job rocks! Great pay and little work! I do think I would be at my desk for days before anyone noticed as well. Some days they don't even know I am here at all.

SJ, apparently all your friends love their jobs. Is there something to be understood here?

Serena said...

Kan, my baby, if the job rocks, you like it, and it pays well, why even think about switching?! I like it when nobody remembers I'm around.:)

I'm not sure what this phenomenon is, Camille. I think it may be just the luck of the draw that everyone who's responded so far likes their job.:)

Ed & Jeanne said...

Hey Serena,
Hate to be the fun spoiler but that story is actually an urban legend...it's on the urban legend web site and has been floating around since 2001...

Oh, and global holidays are my ingenious realization that I work for a global company and will therefore observe all holidays in the world. Means I only have to work one day this year (and call in sick on that day).

Serena said...

VE, I'm actually not surprised to learn that that story was urban legend. I mean, 5 days dead and nobody notices a thing kind of defies credulity. Thanks for clarifying. Made a good conversation piece, though. And now, what I really want to know is how soon I can get hired at your global company! And how long do I have to work before I, too, can call in sick on the one day I'm scheduled to work?:-)

Ed & Jeanne said...

Sorry...its a zen thing. VE goes where nobody wants to go and sometimes he goes where they do and sometimes he goes to the bathroom and sometimes people tell him where to go...

Serena said...

I don't take direction so well, but I can do zen. So, I can work there, right?:-)

I love my job, am compensated at fair market value (although compensation in my field is not. fair. at. all.), and do not feel even remotely appreciated by those who hired me. I do feel appreciated by those for whom I work, however. That's what makes me happy.

Truthfully, however, I hate working for The Man. I'm trying to get up the capital (and the nerve) to work for myself.

Serena said...

Greeny, I think you'd succeed spectacularly with your own practice. I hope you get to do it in the near future.:)
