It Was A Great Weekend, But...

I thoroughly enjoyed my long weekend getaway. We left on Friday and came back yesterday.

In between eating and shopping and other girl stuff, I spent a lot of time here, in my sister's back yard in Wilmington, North Carolina. It was crazy hot and humid but, oddly enough, none of us even got in the pool all weekend.

I got up close and personal enough with this little guy (I have no idea what kind of lizard he is) to snap a photo of him sunning himself Sunday afternoon.

This is me and the friend I drove down with.

This is where we all spent Saturday afternoon, at the birthday party for my precious little great-niece who was turning 2.

The birthday girl.

Sunday night, my sister's dog -- a darling little Jack Russell terrier -- proved herself a warrior princess by pouncing on a snake lurking in a dark corner of the back yard. We were sitting on the patio and thought she was after a lizard and didn't pay much attention -- until we realized there was way too much commotion going on. My sister stood up to take a look and yelled, "It's not a lizard, it's something BIG." Then, a second later, she screamed "Snake!!" whereupon we both ran into the house shrieking like little girls and yelling for our friend. We had no reason to think she'd know what to do, since she's a girly-girl, but dang if she didn't. She grabbed a shovel and dispatched the snake -- which looked very much like a rattler or copperhead or something. It definitely wasn't a black snake or garter snake or anything else harmless looking. We think the dog had already killed it before she got to it, so we then had to wash the blood spots off the dog to make sure she wasn't bitten and bleeding and in need of a mad dash to the emergency vet. We definitely met our excitement quotient for the evening!

So, I was at "The Beach" all weekend but never even made it to the beach. How warped is that?

I'm sure Gilligan and the rest often didn't care if they made it to the beach. Or made it on the beach. I will allow you one viewing of "Beaches" if you like.

I only have (for now at least) one caveat: if we are ever in the same room, and you think you see a snake, please check with me before reaching for a shovel.

"Beaches," Pugsley? You're too kind. You do realize it will be your job to shovel up all the soggy Kleenex?;)

There you go, brandishing that shovel again. In my Pug's life, I've shovelled a lot of material that I'd rather not mention. So sure, I'd be delighted to take care of your accumulated Kleenex.

And btw, what's the deal with your picture? You look irritated ... as if a certain handsome Pug stood you up as your driving buddy, and the other lady was your "Plan-B". I sure hope you never gaze upon yours truly that way.

No, I wasn't irritated. Being careful not to get mowed down by a pack of 2-year-olds doing Demolition Derby, but not irritated. It was more a case of being caught unaware as somebody snapped a photo. But trust me, the sight of Pugs always makes me smile.:)

You're my kinda gal, Serena. I, too, believe the only good snake is a dead snake! I hate them!

It sounds like you had a nice weekend. It's a bit chilly here at present...but then, so it should be seeing it's winter! Take care. :)

No beach... but so much fun, SJ!

Glad you got away.

I always forget it's winter there when it's summer here, Lee. Yeah, I don't like snakes, either. They scare me to death even when I know they're harmless ones.:)

It really was fun, Quid, and I'm so glad I got away for a few days. I needed that, badly.:)

For that neck of the woods, mebbe a copperhead. Your JR terror earned an extree biscuit ;-)

Last unfriendly snake I encountered was five years ago next month; and that one learned how to fly...sorta. Like a golf chip shot ;-)

Nothin' wrong with a little double-dipping every now and again, Lee. LOL.:-)

That brave little doggie got cheesy popcorn, Skunk. I ran into the house to find something to distract her with and get her away from the snake. The bag of popcorn was the first thing I saw, so I grabbed it. It worked great.:) Yeah, I'm guessing it was probably a copperhead.
